Percfest 2005

Is it simply a percussion festival? No, Percfest is different. It’s a sort of social meeting for drummers and percussionists, a 15 hour per day drum party where teachers, students, players and audience are living together in one of the most beautiful towns of the Mediterranean Riviera. Percfest was created 9 years ago in memory of the Italian percussionist Naco and has become one of the world’s most powerful drum festivals: six days with 20 daily events, where the teachers are speaking four different languages (Italian, English, German, Brazilian and Spanish). Percfest 2005 morning events were drum and fitness sessions on the beach; in the afternoon drum and percussion lessons were in the clubs; masterclasses in open theatres and squares, and drum circles were throughout the typical intricate streets in the town of Laigueglia. Over 18,000 drum enthusiasts attended the events, including concerts in the evening and jam sessions during the night. Some of the best Italian and European jazzists played on the stage, with drummers such as France’s most popular André Ceccarelli. Rome’s king Roberto Gatto, gigged in a duo with nutty pianist Stefano Bollani and played with sticks and bare hands with Ecm’s trumpetist Enrico Rava. The "Psyco Drum" quintet fired up the audience with a lineup made up by drummers Enzo Zirilli and Stefano Bagnoli plus vibes wizard Andrea Dulbecco. The duo Roberto Gualdi + Stefano Bagnoli gave life to a captivating masterclass, where the hard rocker Gualdi was called "the devil" and brush specialist Bagnoli "the angel": the paradoxical contrast captured both jazz and metal fans and was one of the most apreciated events, as was the six lesson course led by Luca Capitani on "rock drumming".
